Help for Individuals:
Navigating Faith and Wellbeing in Today’s World
Living as a Christian today brings both joy and complexity. In a rapidly changing world, believers often find themselves navigating emotional strain, cultural tension, and spiritual confusion. The challenges are real—but so is the hope.
Common Challenges Christians Face
Many Christians today wrestle with:
-
Low mood, anxiety, and burnout: The pressures of work, family, and ministry can leave individuals emotionally depleted.
-
Spiritual dryness and doubt: Seasons of unanswered prayer or suffering can shake one’s sense of connection with God.
-
Isolation and loneliness: Especially for those in leadership or caregiving roles, the journey can feel solitary.
-
Balancing faith with modern culture: Secular values, shifting social norms, and digital distractions often pull believers away from spiritual rhythms.
-
Unprocessed grief and trauma: Past experiences—whether personal or church-related—can linger beneath the surface, affecting emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
Despite growing awareness, mental health struggles are still too often ignored, misunderstood, or stigmatised within church settings. Many believers feel pressure to appear spiritually strong, fearing that admitting to anxiety, depression, or burnout might be seen as a lack of faith. Historically, emotional distress has been spiritualised—reduced to sin, weak prayer life, or demonic influence—rather than recognised as part of the human experience.
A 2022 survey by Kintsugi Hope found that 91% of Christians believe mental illness is stigmatised in the Church (Kintsugi Hope & Theos, 2022), with over half saying their church rarely or never speaks about it. This silence doesn’t just isolate—it intensifies suffering. When someone is already battling low mood, anxiety, or trauma, the added fear of judgment or rejection can deepen shame and delay healing. Instead of finding refuge in the church, they may feel unseen or spiritually inadequate. The result is a double burden: emotional pain compounded by spiritual pressure.
